Paintasia: A Pictorial Performance by Alberto Reguera at the University of Hong Kong

Date:  21 Mar 2023 - 21 Mar 2023

By considering the material expression of Alberto Reguera paintings in conjunction with their chromatic resonance, it becomes possible to transcend the works’ physical boundaries. Inspired by the prospect of generating such a fusion of elements, Reguera’s practice of expansive painting strives to move beyond the physical in order to manifest a work’s inherent aura.

Date | Time | Registration

21 March 2023 (Tue) | 6:30 pm–8:00 pm | 6:15 pm–6:25 pm

Venue: Drake Gallery, 1/F, Fung Ping Shan Building, University Museum and Art Gallery, HKU, 90 Bonham Road, Pokfulam, Hong Kong

UMAG invites you to take part in Reguera’s live pictorial performance of his abstract landscape painting Expandidas Luces Nocturnas (Expansive Evening Lights).

This innovative exploration of the possibilities of melding art forms and the power of synesthesia will engage audiences with the sense of intuition and immediacy contained in a single brushstroke.

Artist/Performer:
Alberto Reguera (Segovia, b.1961) is a Spanish artist currently based in Madrid for whom travelling across Spain and around the world has become a way of life. For more than three decades, he has developed numerous projects which consider painting as a starting point, exploring the relationship between his works’ pictorial layers and the interactive attitude of the viewers.
Reguera follows painterly traditions while blurring the distinctions between painting, sculpture, expansive painting, installation work and pictorial performance.

Music:
Heartfelt thanks to guzheng player Grammy Yeung for providing the music recordings for this performance. Grammy Yeung is a Hong Kong-based guzheng player. She graduated from the music department at The University of Hong Kong and received her Master’s of Music from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts. She was awarded the Rayson Huang Scholarship in Music and the Hong Kong Jockey Club Music and Dance Fund Scholarship. Yeung was a gold medalist in The 6th International Zheng Contest’s Professional Youth Group and has performed in various solo recitals and concerts, including with the Musicus Society and the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra.

Thanks also to Yeung Ka Wai (yehu), So Wai Lung (piano accompanist), Law Wai Ting (piano accompanist), Li Bo (composer of Peach Blossom Spring), and the Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Chung Chi College Midday Oasis for making this event possible.
