2. Lecture: Ting Yin Yung─The Artistic Path from Heart
2:00 pm (1 hour)

Abstract
Changes in an artist’s life often affect artistic output. Ming dynasty painter Xu Wei and Bada Shanren from the Qing dynasty, both of whom heavily influenced Ting Yin Yung, are two such examples of painters whose works transformed during tumultuous eras.

Having studied in Japan, and then becoming active in art circles upon his return to China, Ting Yin Yung also lived through significant decades of turmoil. Due to the political climate in the Mainland, he eventually made the decision to leave for Hong Kong, giving up his family and art collection for the opportunity to develop a teaching career that would eventually lead him to a post at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Known for his dedication to his students and his ability to paint his inner feelings Ting Yin Yung’s bird-and-flower paintings, along with the works of fishes, figures and opera scenes often carry satirical connotations that are direct reflections of his life. This lecture will focus on how Ting’s life experiences shaped his art and contributed to his various artistic styles and creative accomplishments.
