Landscapes in Memory: Chinese Landscapes Painting Workshop [Full]

Date:  26 Aug 2023 - 16 Sep 2023

Venue: Workshop Room, G/F, Fung Ping Shan Building, UMAG, HKU, 90 Bonham Road, Pokfulam

Amidst our urban lives, have you yearned for the landscapes that you’ve explored in your past travel experiences? Organised in conjunction with the exhibition “Embracing Landscapes: The Artistic Journey of Professor Jao Tsung-i”, this workshop provides an opportunity to transform your cherished travel memories into a beautiful Chinese ink painting. The instructor will provide a brief introduction to various brushstrokes used for depicting rocks, trees, clouds and water in landscape paintings. She will also demonstrate the effects of these techniques on rice paper and teach participants to create their own landscape work from the perspective of traveling and sketching from life. Participants are required to bring their own landscape photographs taken during travels, which the instructor will guide them interpret and recreate in the form of an ink wash painting.

Instructor: Shum Kwan Yi

Shum Kwan Yi, Sim, a Hong Kong-based artist, holds a Master of Philosophy and a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University. Specialising in ink art, Shum’s work bridges the gap between traditional aesthetics and everyday life experience. Her artistic approach seeks to uncover embedded meanings within landscape paintings and reinterpret the shanshui motifs in the context of our society.
