Jun wares developed during the Northern Song (960–1127) or Jin dynasty (1115–1234). They were produced in a variety of forms, some of which, like drinking vessels, may have been for popular use, while others were made for the imperial court—though these are not mentioned in contemporary documents and their dating remains controversial. They are characterised by rich lavender–blue glazes, often with vibrant splashes of red or purple created by adding copper to the glaze. They were made at kilns in Yuxian county, Henan province, close to the Northern Song capital of Kaifeng, until around the 15th century.
