Weaving Tradition and Contemporary Aesthetics:
Shell Ginger Flower Basket

Date:  9 Aug 2025 - 30 Aug 2025

Venue: Workshop Room, G/F, Fung Ping Shan Building, UMAG, HKU, 90 Bonham Road, Pokfulam

The exhibition Bamboo Baskets: Chinese Origins, Japanese Innovations displays over a century of Japanese bamboo weaving, from traditional to contemporary works. Many pieces blend time-honoured craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, exploring contrasts between reality and illusion, geometry and line.

This workshop uses Alpinia zerumbet (commonly known as shell ginger), a plant native to Hong Kong, as the primary weaving material. Inspired by the flower baskets used in Chinese and Japanese tea ceremonies, the design invites participants to engage with the aesthetics showcased in the exhibition while experiencing the joy of weaving with locally sourced plant fibres.

Instructor: Ankie Au Yeung from Weavebeing

Founded in 2018, Weavebeing is the creation of Ankie, who has been devoted to exploring the intricacies and creative potential of weaving. Her work bridges traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic expression. Deeply inspired by land art, Ankie has recently focused on researching local plant fibres native to Hong Kong. Her creations range from delicate handcrafted objects to large-scale sculptures and natural architectural forms.
