The motif of auspicious clouds has a long-standing history in Chinese culture, symbolising good fortune, happiness and the beauty of life. In ancient times, people believed that ‘clouds’ and ‘qi’ (vital energy) were one and the same, serving as carriers and symbols of vitality, spirituality and auspiciousness.
Characterised by its graceful and elegant patterns, the cloud motif in Chinese culture takes various cloud-inspired forms and is widely applied to objects, clothing and architecture, as well as in religious contexts. This workshop invites participants to appreciate the exhibited works while exploring relief wood carving from an artisanal perspective.
Instructor: Bespecial Wood Carving & Woodcraft
Bespecial Wood Carving & Woodcraft was established in 2013 by the sculptors Vivian Law and Justin Chan, who advocate for a minimalist lifestyle in harmony with Hong Kong’s natural world. Having honed their carving skills in various places, including the UK, Taiwan and Dongyang, Zhejiang province, they work in both modern and traditional techniques. Now based in their Kwun Tong studio, they focus on art creation, community workshops and product design, seamlessly integrating wood carving into the city’s vibrant landscape.
