Abstract:

The Diamond Sutra opens with Subhūti requesting the Buddha to clarify how a Bodhisattva—someone striving for Buddhahood—should direct and discipline his mind to accomplish this formidable goal. Most people would point out that the sutra’s main teaching is on the illusory and the emptiness of self and phenomena. In this talk, I will speak about how the understanding of illusory and emptiness, empowered by the act of compassion, could facilitate the attainment of the real Buddha, the Buddha that neither comes nor goes. Furthermore, I will illustrate the training the sutra prescribed for novice Bodhisattvas—how they could discipline their minds and commit to the illusory path of emptiness.
