The pandemic has propelled numerous museums into the digital realm, where they now offer virtual tours and online activities such as video distribution and webinars, granting remote audiences immediate access to museum collections. The implications of these digital initiatives for the future of art museums are significant. While enhancing accessibility, the need to maintain a balance between online availability and in-person visitation with interactive encounters is paramount. This also highlights the urgency of devising innovative strategies for developing digital collections and institutional acquisitions, all while fostering community engagement, digital inclusivity and equitable accessibility. How do researchers, educators, museum professionals and the general public respond to the associated opportunities, challenges and risks posed by these digital transformations?

This symposium will bring together scholars in universities and museums for in-depth discussions on key issues and case studies related to recent developments in exhibition presentation, interpretive strategies, preservation, research methodologies and the dissemination of knowledge relevant to collections and cultural heritage archives. Through the exchange of diverse scientific and creative perspectives, the objective is to explore the confluence of technology and art pedagogy, museum education and curation. Interdisciplinary dialogues and critical reflections are expected to foster conversations on the pathways, mechanisms and frameworks within academic institutions and broader contexts.

The symposium is a collaborative effort organised by the University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) of the University of Hong Kong and the School of Arts, Nanjing University, with the support of the Jiangsu-Hong Kong-Macao University Alliance (JHMUA).
