Abstract
The Hangzhou National Art School was established with the goal of creating a modern art education system based on the Beaux-Arts model and realising the concept of ‘aesthetic education’ envisioned by the minister of education, Cai Yuanpei. Most of the young faculty members around director Lin Fengmian (1900–1998) had only recently returned from their own studies in France. Together they established a modern training programme for artists in China. They engaged in controversial debates about the state of the Chinese art world and published some of their own work in the art school’s journals. The pedagogical programme can be understood from the catalogues of the graduation exhibitions and the art school’s yearbooks. In this talk, the speaker will discuss the debates over the curriculum and the work within the art school’s studios, and explore how theory and practice informed each other.

Juliane’s research focuses on Chinese art and visual culture of the twentieth century. She is the author of Landschaft und Revolution: Die Malerei von Shi Lu (2009) and Transmedial Landscapes and Modern Chinese Painting (Harvard Asia Center, 2022). Her articles were published in Art History, Ars Orientalis, Trans Asia Photography Review, Xin Meishu, and Twentieth-Century China.
