This lunchtime concert centres on ‘dances’ by a trio of classical composers. The programme is inspired by a letter of the great Italian pianist-composer Ferruccio Busoni to his pupil Egon Petri as a theme for his recitals. The music selection features Carl Maria von Weber’s concert-waltz Invitation to the Dance; selected Mazurkas as well as Frédéric Chopin’s youthful Rondo à la Mazur, both rich in national character and poetic nuances. In celebration of Maurice Ravel’s 150th anniversary, the recital closes with the French composer’s Valses nobles et sentimentales, a shimmering tribute to the elegance and nostalgia of Viennese dance.
