Abstract
What are the newest and most promising museum developments in our region, and how is Shenzhen, in particular, adding unprecedented and innovative cultural platforms to an already well-developed arts scene? This public talk introduces ongoing institutional initiatives, such as the Shenzhen Bay Culture Square, which employ an engaging methodology for learning about and appreciating design.
Join Mr. Felix Kwok, Chief Creative Officer and Deputy Director of the newly opened Shenzhen Bay Culture Square, and Dr Florian Knothe, Director of the University Museum and Art Gallery at HKU, in conversation about the recent development of this large and unique cultural site in Shenzhen. Both art experts discuss the establishment and direction of Design Bay’s new museum, its significant collections, and its future potential to become the premier art education destination in the Greater Bay Area.

Florian Knothe
Researches the history of decorative arts in the 17th and 18th centuries with particular focus on the social and historic importance of royal manufacture. Florian has published and lectured internationally on in the early modern fascination with Chinoiserie and cross-cultural influences in art in Europe and East Asia. Knothe started his career at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Prior to working at HKU, he was Curator of European glass at The Corning Museum of Glass overseeing the European and East Asian collections.
Felix Kwok
Chief Creative Officer and Deputy Director of Shenzhen Design Bay (Shenzhen Bay Culture Square); Registered Auctioneer of China; Academic Advisor at Tsinghua University Academy of Arts & Design Training Center. Former Director and Head of Modern Art at Sotheby’s Asia, where he auctioneered the two most valuable Chinese paintings ever sold by Sotheby’s globally. Named one of the “Most Influential People in Art” by Observer (New York, 2024) and i “40 Under 40 Asia Pacific” by Apollo The Art Magazine (London, 2022).
