NESTORIAN CROSSES WORKSHOP (Postponed)

Date: 8 Jan 2022 - 31 Jan 2022

Nestorian bronze crosses were cast in the Ordos region in northwest China (Inner Mongolia) during the Yuan dynasty (1272–1368). They are flat plaque-like ornaments with an outline in high relief showing motifs such as the Christian Celtic cross and Buddhist swastika. The loop on the back of a majority of the bronzes suggests that they were used as personal seals or worn on the body. UMAG’s Nestorian bronzes are on display as part of the exhibition High Gothic: Christian Art and Iconography of the 13th–14th Century in order to demonstrate the influence of Christian motifs beyond Europe.

In this workshop, the instructor will speak about the characteristics of the Nestorian crosses from the perspective of the craftsmen. Participants will cast a pewter ‘cross’ of their own design.

This workshop will be conducted in Cantonese.
