Hong Kong artist Antonio Mak Hin-yeung (1951–1994) left behind a rich body of sculptural work, as well as an extensive archive of drawings, preparatory sketches and hand-written notes, the vast majority of which have remained unpublished and largely unseen since the early 1990s.
Despite his artistic achievements and influence on generations of Hong Kong artists, little to this point has been written about Mak. Standart: The Collected Drawings of Antonio Mak Hin-yeung unpacks his creative process, presenting more than 500 drawings, collages and notes by the artist ranging from the 1960s to 1990s.
The UMAG pop-up exhibition of this selection of Mak's works on paper complements the book's publication, and serves as another window onto the ecology of both Mak's artistic practice and contemporary Hong Kong art and culture. Items in the exhibition were generously donated by Ms Susan Fong and the Antonio Mak Estate.
