Stools were ubiquitous in Ming (1368–1644) and Qing dynasty China, particularly as smaller seats for women, who were relegated to a subordinate role in a society governed by Confucian ideals. They could also double as seats for enclosed sedan chairs. Holes drilled into the legs enabled them to be attached to the platform; the person sitting on the stool steadied herself by resting her heels on the bottom rung and grasping the sides of the seat.
