Likely made to be worshipped on a small household altar, this figure represents Guanyin, the bodhisattva (‘enlightened being’) of mercy and compassion. One of the most popular Buddhist figures in China, Guanyin originated in India as the male bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, who was transformed—after the introduction of Buddhism to China—into a female bodhisattva associated with the virtues of compassion and mercy.
